Well it’s about time

It only took what, three days to get to Afghanistan? I should be thankful, because apparently the last deployment was in Germany for a week, and we only had two nights there. Germany was pretty nice… Reinmein Air Force base. Where is that in the country? I have no idea, since we weren’t allowed to leave the base. But it was pretty, if cold. Now i guess I see what I was missing by going to lovely Fort Bragg…

The plane was fun. For those of you who have not flown in a military aircraft for a total of about 15 hours or so, you are missing out. They do let you lay down on the cold metal floor wherever you can find room, and they do have this convenient metal bar that hits you right in the tailbone whenever you try to get comfortable. The service, though, is awful. I don’t remember the snack trolley coming by even once…

So now I’m in Afghanistan. Really, it’s like M.A.S.H., only in the desert and a lot less funny. But really, it’s a lot like what you would see on the news. The distance areas look beautiful, with snow in the mountains and blue skies and sunny days. Up close, well, you do have a whole lot of rocks, and the taste of dust is something everyone should experience at least once. We are not terribly busy, just inprocessing into the country, though today a new Army word was established: legitimization. Maybe it exists, and I have never heard it, but I’m tacking it onto my list along with symbology (the study of symbols?), orientate, and having preparedness. Boy oh boy.

My motto has become “Every day is an adventure” because it really is with how often things change. We are here for three to fourteen months and my team has no idea when we are going to our location, primarily because even we don’t know where that location is… no one seems to… I’m sure they’ll figure it out in the next few weeks or so… funny, evey time I say my little motto, circus music seems to be running through my head…

Well, off to see what Afghan steak is like from the chow hall… they say Friday is steak day. We will see about that… then maybe another shower so the dust has a better chance of sticking when it blows through my hair… ah, the scenic areas of the world…

Big Day (well, the day before it, anyway)

Okey doke, so tomorrow we leave, maybe. As I have mentioned, things do change… hopefully, we will be on a plane sometime tomorrow bound for somewhere, at least. That’s about all we can hope for…

At least everything is packed. Can I lift my rucksack? Depends on the stability of the wall I am closest to, and whether or not it will come crashing down when I fall into it. Honestly, I had no idea that I could fit so much into one bag… good thing I packed more than one bag, too… I hope we aren’t moving around too much, because walking has become quite a chore…

So that’s it. What do you say when you are about to leave your bed, your shower, and your cats for some as-yet-undetermined amount of time, wandering off to some as-yet-undetermined place in some as-yet-undetermined country? Not a whole lot, really, since my feelings about this whole mess are also as-yet-undetermined. Not so much nervous as annoyed because really, I love my bed, and a cot (maybe, with a touch of luck) for six to fourteen months is just not going to cut it…

Right then. Onward, Tally Ho, Into The Great Unknown, etc.!

Preppin’

Right then. Afghanistan. Uzbekistan. Wherever. Point of the story is, imminent deployment. How imminent? Ahh… therein lies the critical question. Thus far, we are on date number, oh, let’s say seven just for our purposes. The 8th, the 24th, the 15th… at this point, most people are thinking maybe they didn’t mean for us to move until June and have therefore given up on ever leaving…

But we at least have our things packed now, and set to go. Finally, I have my living room floor back. How encouraging… The rumor is Monday, time is a little shifty, but Monday. The real joy was talking to a friend in the reserves mobilizing in Texas who was supposed to leave today, and they were told around 0400 (4am for you non-military folk… ) that they would maybe leave Friday. Ain’t that just something… your tax dollars at work, my friends…

So I sit here, waiting as I have been since the ol’ husband left almost six weeks ago just to get out of this place, and drink tea and mourn for my Individual Training roommate’s (yeah, Jess… room 120…) twin who made it into the top 32 on American Idol but didn’t make it to the top 3 of her 8… wishing I were a civilian so if she gets called back on the recall episode I can vote for her again… and wishing I were a civilian so I didn’t have to get up at 0500 for PT. Tomorrow isn’t a run day, at least… there are things to be thankful for…
